If you need help from me, email pbutts@portageps.org. You can expect me to respond to email or shared Google Docs between 7 and 9 am the next school day. Visit my VIRTUAL LIBRARY for read aloud videos from Mr. Butts and Ms. Sebrght, links to read alouds from authors, librarians, and celebrities, links to ebooks and audio ebooks, and other online resources from PPS Learning at Home. For book recommendations and daily trivia questions, visit my blog.

To see what we are doing in class each week, click on the grade level links above. The Curriculum link contains PPS Essential Standards for Media. Links includes commonly used websites and our library catalog, Destiny.

The goal of Media is to give all students an opportunity to become more effective users of information. The Library Media Center is an intellectual gymnasium where students can explore almost any subject in books and online. We begin with the organization of our book collection and the Dewey Decimal System and then move on to online encyclopedias and databases. Students learn about online safety and how to share information with online tools such as GoogleDocs.

About Mr. Butts
I joined the Portage Public Schools Media Department in the Fall of 2006. My wife and I enjoy living in the Kalamazoo area. We have two adult daughters, Morgan and Aubrey.

Before coming to Portage I worked for 13 years with Holland Public Schools, 4 years with East Lansing Public Schools, and two years with Morenci Area Schools. I grew up in Ohio and graduated from Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. My undergraduate degree was in English from the University of Michigan and my MSLS was from Wayne State in Detroit. My wife transferred from UofM to MSU, where we were married at the campus chapel, so my loyalties on football Saturdays are "flexible."

Outside of school you may hear me playing the bagpipes with the Kalamazoo Pipe Band, see me swimming at the YMCA down the hill from our home, at the farmer's market looking for new things to cook, and of course looking for books at one of the libraries in town. I also work Saturdays at the Kalamazoo College library.
